I think of interactive writing as part of the "we do" (gradual release of
responsibility) for writing workshop. In the balanced literacy program that
we do at school over the course of a unit in writing workshop there is
shared writing ("I do"-teacher does most of the modeling with a little
student input), interactive writing ("we do"-teacher and student do the
writing together with great student input and maybe even having the students
scribe the writing parts) and then the students do their own writing ("they
do").

I am used to interactive writing in the first grade, for the obvious
reasons. Can it be done in the second, third and fourth grades? And what
would be the goals/purposes of interactive writing at those grade levels?

Thanks!

Interactive writing is when teacher and students collaborate/share during
the composing process.
