I use Great Habits Good Readers and the Daily 5. I think the program is set up so that you can have a balanced literacy block. We do an independent reading time (read to self) for 30 mins and then I have my focus lesson, which is the GHGR for 30 mins and independent implementation of the strategy for 10 - 15 mins and then 30 mins of groups and Daily 5 work. I have found the programs fit with the reading workshop model. The GHGR lessons take about 3 focus lessons, the other 2 days we do Word Study includes vocabulary and spelling/words their way and/or a cafe focus lesson.
It works out nicely, when the kids are working on the D5 they work on a written response in their readers notebooks, vocabulary focused packet, reading with someone and discussion, word sorts or listen to reading - fluency practice with a partner.
