I'm with you June - I'm not very good at writing poetry, but I LOVE
teaching poetry to my students. It always amazes me to see the feelings
and imagination that writing poetry can bring out in children. There
were two points made in chapter 1 that really stuck with me. On page 2
where she described its the emotional environment that matters - not the
desk or objects in a room. Therefore the emotional climate in a
classroom is so important to nurture the poet inside of our students.
Also, we need to make time for poetry writing throughout the school
year, and believe that reading and writing poetry will help our students
to improve. Not to wait till the end of the school year, or for April
which is poetry month! Unfortunately I have been guilty of that. I plan
on trying out some poetry stations - especially the Discovery and Word
Language. LOVE IT!!

I enjoy reading poetry but I have never been able to convince myself
I could actually write something.
I enjoy doing poetry with my students (1st grade) and the time right
now is usually when we start writing out own poems. We have 5th
grade buddies that also come to help out and we often do poetry with
them. I finally just finished typing their tree shaped poems from
Christmas.
I love the idea of creating poetry areas....I am definitely going to
create a exploration area. I often have items out already but
usually I put them away when we are done studying that area. I am
going to add fun collectible items for exploration. I also really
like the poetry scramble and I am considering how to use it for my
1st grade...pocket chart? magnets...not sure...but I'll probably
incorporate that. And I'm going to read more poetry to my students!
Maybe now is the time for me to start writing!
