A poem I was recently introduced to in a workshop is titled, Abuelito Who, by
Sandra Cinsneros. This is an excellent example of imagery at it's best...

Abuelito who throws coins like rain
And asks who loves him
Who is dough and feathers
Who is a watch and glass of water...

The poem creates vivid visual images that can be used to develop comprehension
with students. The idea is for children to focus on a literature standard to
determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in text, including
figurative language such as similes and metaphors.

The strategies given include:
Before reading.....bring artifacts for students to examine: coins, play dough,
feathers, a watch, drinking glass, white fur, doorknob... Discuss literally
what objects are, where they can be found, and what type of person might own.
Finally Discuss what the objects remind them of. They could even write a poem
about the objects after examining...

During reading.... Read each line and stop to reflect on what does each line
uncover. Who is talking, what type of person is the poem about...

After reading....students select one line of the poem to make an inference
followed by a hypothesis. Use the following strategy to stretch the
understanding... It says, I say, and so.

A college professor once told a group of teachers, doctors sign an oath
concerning their treatment of patients. Teachers he concluded must follow the
same commitment to make certain they read daily to students; poetry, chapter
books and picture books.... Modeling engagement with good literature,
curiosity, and love for reading. Reading poetry and loving it
is a part of the culture established in each classroom.
