In keeping with the Title 1 suggestions (and I'm Canadian so I may be off track
as to what is permitted or wanted) -- I love the high-interest-low-vocab
materials from Dorling Kindersley. See "Dorling Kindersley Readers", for
example, "Antarctic Adventure". These are beautiful soft cover books with very
high 'adventure' type appeal (especially for boys) -- I've used them
individually, also with one-to-one volunteers (with some coaching), also in
packs of five with reading groups. Not the cheapest but very high quality as to
selections re page layout, illustrations, sidebars and so on.

was a particular hit but the others at this level are good as well.

See level 4 at http://www.dk.co.uk/static/html/uk/series/readers.html  and
explain to your kids what "proficient" means ("proficient readers") .  ;-)
These books are gorgeous, and still, soft cover etc. Give low SES kids
especially a chance for beautiful materials??
