At my school where public school students wear uniforms, independent
reading is encouraged by rewarding students with wearing jeans on Friday if
they have met their weekly reading goal. It's a powerful motivator for
fifth graders. This year we require they read a "just right" book (We
teach them what that looks like.) and they must read 100 pages during the
week. They have a vocabulary collection bookmark to record unfamiliar
words. Weekly there will be a vocabulary assignment to complete with three
of their unfamiliar words. That will also be checked along with the
reading log to determine if they have fulfilled the requirement to wear
jeans. Most of our kids love to read, but the schoolwide jeans reward does
seem to motivate our reluctant readers.
