Diolch yn fawr, Hieu! We wanted to buy a new computer (a Windows OS is
mandatory) and thought we might as well get one that’s likely to be supported
for some time to come. I had an useful response from the Cygwin mailing list
which I’ll copy here in case it is of interest to other Moses users:

Cygwin under Windows 7 works fine for me. The things I noticed were:

- It was helpful to some things, especially perl and things

built from it, to rebase all the dlls. I have a script

for that, though rebaseall may do it for you.

- Since I am just a single user, etc., I disable the Windows

Vista/7 UAC controls so that more things run without annoying

popups to ask permission (and some things just won't run

without further fiddling if UAC is on).

I think people have resolved UAC issues with further work, but it seems to be a
topic that comes up from time to time.

That is, for sophisticated things it can be tricky to get them going with UAC
on.

I found a thread explaining the UAC problem at
http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistasecurity/thread/67bfc4b5-faff-4de4-be48-f395bf1c519d.
There is an unofficial third-party software available from
http://www.itknowledge24.com/ to create a white list so that specific programs
can be exempted from UAC prompts. We don't have a computer with Windows 7 yet,
so can't test it out, but I like the idea.

Llio

Bore da Lilo

from my experience, Cygwin works the same on whatever windows host its running
on, so I don't think there'll be a problem.

However, cygwin is only available as a 32-bit environment, so you won't be able
to access more than 3-4GB RAM. If the reason that you're moving to Windows 7 is
to access more memory with a 64-bit OS, you're gonna be out of luck. you can
compile the moses decoder natively with visual studio, but I would suggest
using linux.
