Hello,

I'd like to start by saying thank you to those who've written motion.
It's a superb tool. If I were any good at C (instead of
Python/Java/JS/etc) then I'd love to contribute. I have some questions:

1. Is it possible to configure motion to dump a camera stream to a file,
ie have a rotated 'everything' file, for those moments when the motion
detection didn't work and I want to review a day of footage?

2. Is it possible to use area_detect for motion detection, as opposed to
the alert script? Removing parts of the view as detectable area seems
very sensible when you've got trees/light issues causing false
detection.

3. Is it possible to configure a minimum motion time, ie I only care
about alerts more than 2 seconds? I'm seeing a lot of very small clips
being recorded, ie just a few frames.

Thanks

John

1. look for timelapse option
2. dunno
3. specify "minimum motion frames" accordingly to your frame rate

Great, thanks. I've just found timelapse. I note it creates an avi video
but the ffmpeg feature can be configured to create ogg videos, so
perhaps the ogg part can be added to timelapse? Not a big issue though.

What does "[1] [WRN] [NET] netcam_init_jpeg: no new pic, no signal rcvd"
mean? I assume it's referring to thread 1? I'm pinging my cameras and
there's no packet loss, but perhaps it means motion missed a frame.
Perhaps the message can be changed:

"[WRN] [NET] [Camera 1]: Could not obtain a new frame after Xms from
previous frame - try changing XX to resolve"

or something a little more descriptive? Is there some config option to
reduce this error, perhaps querying for a frame less often?

I'm running two cameras off hot plugs which is perhaps why I have a
200ms ping response.

I use swf format which is actualy MPEG2, but supports video append (resume)
if you restart motion. AVI will overwrite
