I agree. It's one of those areas of motion that looks like an idea was
added, without thinking about how it could be done more generically.
I've created a mask_file, but it's a lot of effort. It would be useful
to have a more generic approach for users who want to configure
"detection in all but the top left" or whatever.

Well, that's probably one of those advantages when having write access to the 
code repository...
And I really did it only for detecting the cat. But in order to make it less 
obvious, I gave it a different name.
