I found the default / reset procedure didn't work for some cameras too.? The "activating" doesn't sound like something I had to do, but I did have some trouble with one brand that required a fresh Internet Explorer (I.E.) install (I used a virtual machine), and disabling all the security settings in I.E..? The cameras that require I.E. want to download a I.E. plug in, which is why I only used them with a virtual machine (disposable). For Linux tools, all you really need is Wireshark.? With that, you can monitor the interface and see what IP address the camera is at.? You can also use 'nmap' to scan for open ports on a camera. How did I discover the phone home?? I disassembled the firmware image on the cameras, looking for the URLs for streaming video and snapshots.? There were literally dozens of embedded IP addresses and URLs. None of the cameras I bought came with the URL information for streaming to Motion (or anything else).? Once I found a URL, I used VLC to test the streaming interfaces, and a web browser for the snapshot URLs.? Once I had those working, I used the same address in the Motion thread config file.? There are a few websites out there with URLs for a lot of common IP based cameras.? I would start with reviewing those sites, to see if your camera is listed. I would avoid using a SD card for anything.? I found that it doesn't take long before you "wear out" the SD cards.? For the cameras I didn't find a working snapshot URL, I stream low frame rates (5 frames / second, configured on the camera) to Motion, and let it do the motion detection.? I started out trying to use the CPU on the cameras to do the motion detection, since they all claim to support that, then email or FTP a image to a central Linux server.? That proved too much for the firmware running on the cameras (never worked).? They all say they can do it, but I was not able to get any of them to actually do it (spent a lot of time trying). Motion still has issues, but it's the best solution I've found so far.? I have 8 cameras setup that I check every couple of days, and I'm still tweaking the settings (it's been 2 years).? There are a lot of false positives.? For example, one ill placed spider web will get me 15,000 snapshots in one night.? Moving tree shadows also generate a lot of pictures. -- Rob.
