Try installing from github or the motion website. There are instructions on
the motion website on how to install from source or using apt. The install
page on the website is https://motion-project.github.io/motion_build.html.
If you don't want to reinstall motion it mentions a script you can download
on https://motion-project.github.io/motion_download.html that reports any
missing packages.

Hi,
That works.
Although there were a few questions raised.

The instructions at https://motion-project.github.io/motion_build.html
tried to do this:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
 ? pkg-config
The following NEW packages will be installed:
 ? pkgconf

which I saw did the _opposite_ the other day when I updated fully.
So which one is right? or maybe both work.

The script builddeb.sh had me install 8 more packages. Maybe that was
the problem earlier, but:

$ git clone https://github.com/Motion-Project/motion.git
and $ ./configure results in version:
motion 4.3.1+git20210125-34091a7
which is both newer and older than 4.3.2? ?

Good news, it compiled, and installs without any errors. Whichever above
reason makes the difference.

Default installed it in /usr/local/bin so now I have both binaries, but
will have to see which one loads by default in /etc/init.d/motion
Ah, /bin/motion is first in path.

Should I have configured prefix to overwrite /bin/motion or should I
edit path in /etc/init.d/motion to load /usr/local/bin/motion ?
or should I demonstrate my non-newbie status by getting this far, and
just fixing it... Just wondering which is more correct, for other's benefit.

On to testing...
Stewart
