With my phone camera, which is pretty good, I need at least a 1 second
exposure at fastest iso/gain settings to pick up the aurora. If processing
power is available it might well be possible to stack say 100 frames over a
few seconds to get the aurora to be prominent enough to detect by some
algorithm. Monitoring relative intensities of pixels on different parts of
the sky may be the place to start, especially if compared over two or more
successive stacked images.
