Monday afternoon, 2:30 to 3:45 PM: North of Black Dog Lake, where Black Dog Lake drains into the Minnesota River, north side of Black Dog Road, first parking turn off to the left as one goes East from 35W on Black Dog Road. @ Black Legged Kittiwake, Juvenile (one) @ Ring-billed gulls (20 plus) @ Bald Eagles (3 or 4, both first year juvenile and adult) @ Probable first year juvenile herring gull @ Slate colored juncos, (more than 10) @ Mallards (15 or more) and @ Red tailed hawk, perched on top of the light standard in the middle of the Burnsville Parkway bridge over 35W, about 100 yards North of Hwy 13. Arrived at Black Dog area about 2:25 PM, at first seeing only a few ring billed gulls, then starting at 3:10 PM observed the Kittiwake for about 15 minutes as it circled the Minnesota River where a lot of river current from Black Dog Lake drains into the Minnesota R. Observed Kittiwake from as close as 15 feet. The Kittiwake did not land, and was scared off from picking up some food in the open water by a dive by a juvenile Bald Eagle. The Kittiwake was very clean, and looked like it had just had a fresh bath, the whites were pure white, black legs, black terminal band on tail, shorter tail, Black leading edges of wings, smaller black mark behind eye and heavier black band over neck just behind post-ocular mark, smaller than the ring-billed gulls, shorter tail The terminal black band on the Kittiwake's tail was observed to be on both the upper and lower surfaces of the tail, a bit narrower on the lower surface. Got excellent, multiple, close-up looks top, bottom, side, etc. The Kittiwake flew east down the Minnesota river about 3:25 PM. There were lots of gulls circling the river about 600 yards to the east of the Black Dog Lake outlet, down near the Power Plant just at or past the bend in the river.
