Clearwater County Yesterday and again today the feeding stations were visited by one each of Tree, Fox and White-throated Sparrow. Junco numbers are decreasing. Goldfinch numbers are increasing and a few Pine Siskin are joining them. Three Common Redpoll also made an appearance today, the first this Fall. A small group of seven Evening Grosbeak may be making the farm a regular stop. If I miss their feeder visits I frequently hear them calling in the woods. Deer firearm season in the second of three weekends here in a Zone 1 Intensive Management Area. The DNR is encouraging hunters to take as many as 5 deer in our area to reduce the overpopulation and help mitigate the damage being done to forests. Evenings sound like the 4th of July around the farm. Land on all sides of our property are being hunted by as many as a dozen hunters in stands scattered through woods and pasture. What does this have to do with birding? Corvids and Bald Eagles at gut piles! I had my deer processed 2 miles down the road and was pleased when they let me take a few extra deer carcasses to make a scavenger pile in the front pasture. I'm looking forward to watching Ravens and Magpies at my new feeder this Winter!
