The weather warmed up in the late morning, and the results were amazing. Although documentation and acceptance is necessary for some of these species, this is good news in the second year of the Red Wing CBC, restored after it was dropped in the 1970's. There were high numbers of Eastern Bluebirds (37) and American Robins (122). Thousands of waterfowl were in the few open areas along the Mississippi, mostly Common Goldeneye, Mallards and Common Mergansers. Here are the highlights of our preliminary tally: Trumpeter Swan 8 Redhead 1 Bufflehead 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk 1 Cooper's Hawk 1 Red-shouldered Hawk 1 Rough-legged Hawk 3 American Kestrel 2 Golden Eagle 1 Merlin 1 Greater Black-backed Gull 1 Barred Owl 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 1 Northern Shrike 2 Tufted Titmouse 4 Red-breasted Nuthatch 6 Brown Creeper 4 Varied Thrush 1 Lapland Longspur 2 Snow Bunting 4 Brown-headed Cowbird 19 White-winged Crossbill 30 Pine Siskin 29 We had five feeder watchers this year, who helped a great deal with the regular count numbers, plus some excellent new birders. This was due to an article Phil Dech sent to the Red Wing local newspaper several weeks before our first count date. We are already looking forward to next year! Many thanks to all involved in this CBC. Laura Coble Cannon Falls, MN ---- Join or Leave mou-net:http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives:http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
