Hello. I am a new birder and have not made any contributions to this list serv yet. Last night just after dusk (1/7/09) while observing a bald eagle at Minnehaha creek below the VA birdge, a great horned owl flew into a tree just 20 yards from the eagle. We also observed a second eagle and a wild turkey in the park.

On Tuesday at the Minnesota valley wildlife refuge we were looking for antler sheds not knowing we were near an eagle nest when much to our surprise one vocalized at us from their nest before both flew out into another tree. We quickly retreated back through the tall grasses. When we turned around to look at the impressive nest we noticed a lone smallish hawk like bird in a single standing tree just south of the nest. I am not an expert on birds but it looked like a northern hawk owl. I would love to know if anyone has seen one in the area.

All week we have observed swans at the open water on the north end of Snelling lake in Fort Snelling SP. The open water is just below the bluff.

One more thing, is the large nest behind the 58 club on cedar an eagle nest? If so, why is it not fenced off?

Thanks!
