>From trhe FOREST on the Straight River in Faribault: Today there has been a lot of bird feeding activity. Kirsten saw an unusual bird for us, though we have seen it before for our yard bird - BROWN CREEPER. At 3:15 I looked out the kitchen window. I was surprised to see a Downy Woodpecker on the south side of a tree, next to the tree, with the suet. It wasn't moving to the suet so I suspected that a hawk was in the area. Looking around I spotted a bird in the top of a tree, about 100 feet up and north of the Downy Woodpecker. Examining it closely, with binoculars I was happy to learn it was a NORTHERN SHRIKE - a new species for our yard. That makes 76 species for us since January 2000. Forest Strnad Faribault, Mn.
