This past friday I led my first bird trip, as a solo guide. Wow what a fun time :) Even though I began my guiding at 9:00am, I arrived at the bog at 7:00am, just to make sure I could scout out some areas beforehand.
Here's what I observed during my total time between sunrise and about noon at the bog: Northern Goshawk (beautiful adult, just hangin' out on the side of the road!) Sharp-tailed Grouse Ruffed Grouse Northern Hawk Owl Downy Woodpecker Hairy Woodpecker Black-backed Woodpeckers (2 at one time, and got to observe them within a few feet of each other) Gray Jays Blue Jay Black-billed Magpies American Crow Common Raven Red-breasted Nuthatch Black-capped Chickadee Boreal Chickadee (2 feeding on Admiral road suet at the same time!) Evening Grosbeak Pine Grosbeak White-winged Crossbills Common Redpolls Hoary Redpolls (3 for the morning... 2 at different public road feeders, and another near Black-backed Woodpeckers on the side of the road). It was cool to observe a Hoary Redpoll feeding naturally without the use of a feeding station. First one I've ever seen without a feeder!
