Birding Bhutan by Dave Cahlander Marj and Dave Cahlander went on a VENT trip to Bhutan and Assam, India in April 2005. The photos Dave will show are from this trip and a trip to India the previous year that included an extension to the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. Bhutan is located in the foothills of the Himalayas and strictly limits tourist traffic. The people dress in the same garments that they have used for hundreds of years. The only road through this country winds back and forth hugging the side of the mountains that they were in. During their birding trip, Dave and Marj slept in tents, pitched in fields that had been used for grazing yaks. Of the 260 species that they saw in Bhutan, Dave was able to photograph 169 species. The birds of Bhutan include some families that are not seen in other regions. By far the most interesting are the "Babblers" including Green Shrike-Babbler, Rufous-winged Fulvetta, Black-chinned Yuhina and Rufous Sibia. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - When: Please join us at 7:00 pm at the Bloomington REI store to socialize over coffee and cookies from 7:00 to 7:30 pm.
