I was surprised to see an American Kestrel today, flying along Hwy 2, about 1/2 mile west of Proctor, MN (just SW of Duluth). There's great habitat around (open fields and a train yard) and at first I thought it was a Merlin. It flew cooperatively alongside me for several seconds, long enough for me to recognize the meandering, 'floppy' flight of a kestrel. It was not an adult male--I was able to see it's back clearly enough to know that, though I couldn't speculate if it was a female or an immature male. What a treat!
