Steve & all-

About 3 times over the weekend in Dakota County I encountered the same type
of flock. Once was at the new Vermillion River WMA west of Hwy 52 on Sunday.
My husband and I were able to get enough field marks to identify some of the
200 or so birds as Lapland Longspurs. We also saw a few small flocks of
migrating snow geese among the many flocks of Canada geese.

The other large flock encounters were along County Road 85/Goodwin Ave &
150th street west of Hastings (near the GIANT American flag) on Saturday and
again on Sunday. I can only estimate that the Saturday flock included about
400
birds! In those flocks I identified at least a few Snow Buntings among the
group but I think the rest were longspurs. The horned larks I saw over the
weekend seemed to be in singles or small pairs.

Amazingly each time I did not have binoculars handy ...young kids will do
that to you I guess! :)
