Which spring migrant brings you the greatest joy? Which migrant - when you
first see and/or hear it - causes you to stick a fist in the air or dance a
bit of a jig (or however you express yourself)?
Candidates, for me, include the first Red-winged Blackbird and Sandhill
Cranes - for they signify spring is coming - or the first Yellow-rumped
Warbler, since they often precede the initial passerine waves - or the first
Scarlet Tanager, since my passions are reds and oranges.
But, for now, I'm exalting the Golden-winged Warbler, since they somehow
signify a summer of nesting warblers to my spirit - that walks and travels
in central and northern Minnesota from May through early September will
(nearly always) include representatives from my favorite bird group.
