We had our FOY song sparrows today in Cook Co. Spring is finally coming
to the northland. Still more snow than bare ground in our neighborhood,
though.
Other new birds:
Fox Sparrows - one on April 1 in all the snow, at least 12 this morning.
Tree Sparrows - first ones yesterday, 30 or more today
Slate-colored Junco - increasing all week. Yard looked like rice with
black beans this afternoon, even more juncos than tree sp.
Brown creeper - one this morning
Flickers - turned up last week just after the snowstorm. Ants will be
hard to find for a while.
Kestrels moving through, none on territory yet right here.
At least one Merlin has been here since February, maybe all winter.
Many Common Goldeneye in Grand Marais harbor last Thursday, mostly males.
Three Hooded Merganser in GM, 2 males, 1 f
Red-breasted Mergansers in small flocks on L. Superior
Need to remember the scope next trip to good lake-watching spots!
