In addition to the California Gull (23 May, Agassiz NWR) and Henslow's
Sparrow (24 May, Pennington Co) already posted on MOU-net, the
Minnesota Weekends Birding (MBW) group had some other noteworthy
species this weekend in NW Minn. We covered parts of Kittson,
Marshall, Pennington, and Polk counties (plus a side trip for half the
group to see the Lazuli Bunting in Otter Tail Co). Among the
highlights were:
- American Black Duck: 22 May, Kittson Co
- Northern Goshawk: 23 May, Agassiz NWR, Marshall Co (immature along
CR 7 west of headquarters)
- Rough-legged Hawk: 24 May, northern Polk Co (very late migrant along
CR 23 just west of Pennington Co line)
- 25 shorebird species (plus a possible Western Sandpiper on 23 May at
Headquarters Pool, Agassiz NWR: only partial views; photos under review)
- Eurasian Collared-Dove (2): 25 May, Fertile, Polk Co
- Short-eared Owl (2): 23 May, Pennington Co (CR 20) and Marshall Co
(180th St)
- Blue-gray Gnatcatcher: 22 May, Lake Bronson State Park, Kittson Co
- 22 warbler species: including 21 species in Kittson Co on 22 May; 20
species in Marshall Co on 23 May, mostly at Agassiz NWR headquarters;
and 20 species at Wetlands, Pines and Prairie Audubon Sanctuary in
Polk Co on 24 May)
We also saw a small herd of Elk in Kittson Co, thanks to Larry
Wilebski. In all, we had a total of 200 species (!), which is our
highest weekend total in MBW's 24-year history.
