Hello all,

Last night, I did a waterbird/rail survey for my priority block of the Breeding Bird Atlas. The air was cool and calm - perfect conditions for rail-listening. While the sun set and the moon rose, I heard an AMERICAN BITTERN, 2 LEAST BITTERN, and numerous VIRGINIA RAILS at Black Rush WPA, Lyon Co., MN. Observations occurred between 8:15 and 10:15pm, just along the 'road' that bisects Black Rush marsh. I also watched quietly while an AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was fishing within 40 feet of me. When it saw me and flew, the YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS made a strange alarm - something I had never heard before.

After that, I did a mini owl survey. I hooted, but no one responded - save for a family of raccoons. I guess I'm too late to survey for owls. :(
