The Yellow-crowned Night Heron was present at the previously reported site in Minnetonka, Hennepin County, from 3:45 until 4:45pm. First he was up high in the willow tree, but then at about 3:35 he flew down to the east side of the pond. He began walking (stalking?) into the cattails as a few other birders and I left at 4:45. All the views were great. I took some decent photos with my cell phone camera and spotting scope, but I hope that Chris, who was taking pictures with an actual camera, will put a picture up on the Recently Seen page sometime tonight. (If not, then I'll display one of my "beauties." :)

It is interesting that it roosted in a weeping willow. I've been keeping close track of the Black-crowned Night Herons on Cortlawn Pond (Golden Valley, Hennepin Co.) and they exclusively roost in willows. For the past few days, there has only been one Black-crowned Night Heron at Cortlawn, but one evening last week I had four. (Keep in mind that I canoe this pond daily, so it's easier for me to see them than for walkers.) Good bird finds from yesterday in Golden Valley include Ring-necked Pheasant and Scarlet Tanager.

Here are some directions for those still coming out to look for the Yellow-crowned Night Heron: As said in previous posts, go south on Greenbriar Rd for 1/2+ mile. Keep to the right. You'll see a sign that reads "Greenbriar Ponds", and about an 1/8 mile after that, there is an urban pond (with a fountain!) on the right (north) side of the road. This is the pond where the bird has been seen all day. Park in the apartment parking lots that surround the pond (also on the right.)

Good birding!

I checked out the pond and as of 1:15pm the bird was still there. A
clarification on directions to the pond is as follows: from Cedarlake rd
turn SOUTH on Greenbriar and go approx 1/2 mile and you will find 10511 on
your right. The pond sits right in front of the building and is easily
visable from the street. There is a clump of cattails etc. on one side and
that was where I saw the bird.

Good luck and Good birding!
