For those interested in the up-coming swift-count next weekend, I've noticed just today a dramatic increase in the number of chimney swifts hunting over our neighborhood. Last year, the school kitty-corner from the house hosted over 130 roosting birds, so it's been dismaying to see only a half dozen flying about to feed, so far. I've been hoping they were simply dispersed for breeding purposes.
To my delight, while I was out hanging laundry today, there appeared at least 3 times that many, swooping overhead. Perhaps they're "locals" just congregating where the food source is, perhaps some of them are newly-fledged babies learning the ropes, or maybe some of them are early migrants on their way south. Whatever the case, the burgeoning number makes the prospect of the count MUCH more fun.
