Thanks to Vic Lewis' vigilance and faithful posting, I got to view
the Yellow-crowned Night Heron---the only adult I've ever seen, as
last year I saw only a juvenile, with Diana Doyle, near Minnehaha
Creek. Had Vic not been brave enough to post his phone number, it
might not have happened. The bird was there, alright, but I'd not seen
it, being a bit leery of tromping too close on private property, and
viewing it through the veil of water from the aerator.
When I called Vic to make inquiries, he was kind enough to come out
and scan with me. It was in the cattails at the water's edge, in a
hunched-over position, with one wing outspread to make shade, his head
curled under, and eye cocked to see into the shadow. (Vic says the
bird has been feasting on crayfish.) We were easily able to see the
mottled yellow on top of its head.
Thank you, Vic--good thing getting lifers isn't always this smooth, or
I'd do way too much chasing!
