Been spending my days fishing off my dock near my home and bemoaning
my fate of having to fish every evening or so after a short walk.
Kept seeing some Great Blue Herons interacting and hunting as well as
a bold Green Heron. Kept seeing this one what I thought was a Green
Heron but it looked really pale even though it flew in just like the
Green. Never really gave it much thought until I leant my pole to a
friend just as the bird came in. It didn't land on the lily pads like
the heron, it flew directly into the cattails. Then I got a good look
at a text book pose - an
American Bittern!!!!
Wowsa! Wowsa! Another lifer right near home.
Then I was up at the Gunflint Lodge this last week and fed a good
sized flock of ducks and such with free dried cracked corn the lodge
provides as well as complimentary hot beverages. We weren't staying,
just road tripping due to the rain all week during our camping
vacation. Two birds came in that I couldn't ID and one was there that
I could - both lifers. One was easy - several American Black Ducks.
The ones I couldn't figure out I had to rely on the numerous photos I
took up close. Turns out I had two
Barrow's Goldeneye females.
More lifers!!! Yay and a Wowsa together! Despite the rain, a great
trip including a wolf, Gray Jays, and a loon only some 10 feet away
from my canoe. Yes!
