Karl Bardon, Jane Hosking, and I enjoyed some nice birding this
afternoon, despite the foul weather. The main highlight was a pair of
jaegers twice seen along Park Point, Duluth. We first ran into the
duo at 12th Street, an adult light-morph Parasitic Jaeger accompanied
by a subadult (with barred underwings), most likely the same species,
based upon identical size and structure. The pair quickly moved
towards Minnesota Point and so we followed in pursuit. At the Park
Point Recreation Area we were again treated to a quick view of these
two birds as they crossed over the peninsula, from the Superior,
Wisconsin side. Both times the birds were seen flying in tandem, so
they are apparently enjoying each other's company. This pair is
almost certainly the same birds that Peder Svingen reported from the
Park Point Recreation Area on 24 August. We were also treated to a
beach-bound flock of shorebirds that contained a half dozen
Sanderlings and 4 Baird's Sandpipers. Also present was a single
Caspian Tern and Bonaparte's Gull.

A walk around 40th Avenue West produced a few shorebirds, the best of
which were 3 American Golden-Plovers and 10 Stilt Sandpipers. While
the golden-plovers were all molting adults - with blotchy black and
white underparts - the Stilts were in crisp, juvenile attire. Other
highlights from a spin around the impoundment included 3 Redhead,
Sora, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, 2 Mourning Warblers, and a handful of
Bobolinks.

    Good Birding,
