I was leaving the DNR building on Lafayette Rd. yesterday at 3:00 p.m. when a shrike flew across my path and landed (very briefly) in a hawthorn tree next to the sidewalk. It was only about 15 feet from me. I think we were both startled and it immediately shot off (with a good tail wind) across the building's back parking lot. Sadly, I was unable to pursue it to identify it to a specific shrike species. The bird struck me is being more lithe than the Northern Shrikes I have observed.
