Barb and I were completely surprised that on Saturday night with thunderstorms all around (we could see lighting) that the Yellow Rails in the McGregor marsh were calling like crazy all around the trail crossing. So many times with just a threat of rain they were quiet but certainly not this night.
Other birds of interest included a Field Sparrow (1.5 miles east of 169 on Cty Rd 18) and a Great Gray Owl slightly east of its normal location on Cty Rd 18 (about .2 east of the Hebron Cemetery, almost to the edge of the woods.) Missed on the hawk owl both Saturday PM and Sun AM. A single Whip-poor-will was calling about a mile east of Palisade on Cty Rd 10 and a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher was found on Conifer Street on the north side of Lake Mille Lacs. Somewhat north of the normal range but not new in past years to this location.
