A Minn Birding Weekends group birded the North Shore from Two Harbors to the Silver Bay area today, 24 September, and found a few things of note. The highlights were a lone Red-necked Phalarope at the Castle Danger sewage ponds (any phalarope in NE Minn is unusual), and 2-3 unusually early Bohemian Waxwings in Beaver Bay (Slater Dr, between Hwy 61 and the lake).

Also noteworthy were:

- a small flock of Cackling Geese near the Castle Danger sewage ponds

- an early Tundra Swan at the same sewage ponds; there were also 5-6 distant, unidentified swans which flew by

- at least 20 Merlins hunting at various locations (none appeared to be migrating); 3 Peregrine Falcons also seen, 2 of these at Castle Danger

- literally hundreds of American Pipits migrating along the N Shore; also lesser numbers of Horned Larks and Lapland Longspurs (most of these at Castle Danger)

- a late Yellow Warbler at Iona's Beach SNA

- dozens of migrating Savannah Sparrows, many of these uncharacteristically in wooded areas; curiously, hardly any other sparrows seen
