Last year I predicted we would break a million mallards observed on the
Minnesota CBC. Well I was right (1,005,541) so trust me when I say you will
have a good time on this year's Christmas Bird Count. Slip on the wool socks
and head to http://moumn.org/CBC/index.php and find a location or two or
three. and then join up.

St. Paul North now leads Bloomington in the Metro Mallard Wars 174,525 to
170,081 and since last year the score was 169,661 to 165,065 it is evident
that Bloomington had a net gain of 152. Not dramatic, but a comeback just
the same. The Mallard becomes the 3rd species to break the million bird
barrier behind the Canada Goose and the House Sparrow. The next candidate
is.European Starling - currently at 700,156. At the current rate, the
Starling will break the barrier in approximately 15 years.

A quick look at the Recently Seen page on the website displays Ferruginous
Hawk, Common Ground Dove, and Long-tailed Jaeger. Pomarine and Parasitic
Jaegers have also been reported recently. Of these 5 species, precisely 0
have been seen on a Minnesota CBC.
