Hi Ben,

This may be the only state where this question can easily be answered on the web.

Go to the incredible MOU website (http://moumn.org), go to "Review Reported Birds" and choose "Query Sightings Database".

For this question, I chose to sort by day of the year, put my starting date back a hundred years, and selected Chipping Sparrow for species. I had the do the query twice sorting by ascending and descending dates as the query returned too many sightings.

Results:
16 sightings in 1st half of Nov.
4 sightings in 2nd half of Nov.
14 sightings in 1st half of Dec.
27 sightings in 2nd half of Dec
7 sightings in 1st half of Jan.
0 sightings in 2nd half of Jan
2 sightings in February
5 sightings in 1st half of March
18 sightings in 2nd half of March

All but 3 of the late December sightings were on CBC's. There were a total of 33 reports on CBC's, including two in January. I did not take notice if sightings included more than one bird.

Good find! Rare, but not unheard of.

Subject: [mou-net] Chipping Sparrow still in backyard (Hennepin County)

We have relocated the Chipping Sparrow eating seed in our backyard this
afternoon. Not sure that it is the same one that we had in our backyard
last week, but it doesn't seem like there would be a whole lot of other
Chipping Sparrows around at this point.

At this point, it seems like it is getting extremely late in the year to see
any Chipping Sparrow in MN.

Does anybody know what the latest a Chipping Sparrow has ever been seen in
the metro area or MN in general?

*We also had a not-so-common visitor a couple of days ago with a Pileated
Woodpecker at our feeder.
