Looks like the Male Rough-Legged Hawk is gonna winter next to our building.
Since my last post I've seen him outside every work day, hunting rodents. He
is very successful, on Friday I saw him eat three times (he is out there
hunting right now.) He is coexisting with the big female Red-Tailed Hawk that
shows up about once a day, sometimes they chase each other but usually they
hunt at the same time with no problem. Another birder saw a Red Fox check out
the RLH last weekend.
The RLH loves perching on the letter 'r' shaped pipes that are scattered across
this field. There are so many rodents in this field that sometime he just has
to jump down from a pipe & easily grab a meal. He also perches in trees in the
immediate area. I now consider this bird 'dependable.'
If you want to see this bird, I suggest parking on 14th St NW just East
of 5th Ave NE (Old Highway 8), there is room on the shoulder & his
favorite perches are visible from there.
Location: New Brighton, Old Highway 8 Roughly from 694 to 14th St NW.

To get here: Easiest to Google Map: 154 14th Street NW New Brighton MN
Directions: Highway 35W to Highway 96 - West on 96 to the T, left (South) at
the T, 14th Street is about 1/4 mile on the left.
