This rough-leg is still around and pretty easy to find. I headed over yesterday
and found him after just a couple of minutes. I did not get any real good shots
of the bird perched, as I did not want to get close enough to possibly stress
the bird, but he was cooperative and flew overhead quite close to where I was
standing allowing me to get this very nice flight shot.

I did get some hover pics also but they were from further away. If you would
like to see those you can check out today's post.

Jason, I am envious that you get to have a birds eye view of this hawk every
day. I wonder how you can get any work done. Thanks for sharing him with the
rest of us.

Thanks,
Jeff Fischer

Subject: [mou-net] Rough-Legg ed Hawks - New Brigh ton - Rams ey County‏ -
Update (Long)

Looks like the Male Rough-Legged Hawk is gonna winter next to our building.
Since my last post I've seen him outside every work day, hunting rodents.  He
is
very successful, on Friday I saw him eat three times (he is out there hunting
right now.)  He is coexisting with the big female Red-Tailed Hawk that shows up
about once a day,  sometimes they chase each other but usually they hunt at the
same time with no problem.  Another birder saw a Red Fox check out the RLH last
weekend.

The RLH loves perching on the letter 'r' shaped pipes that are scattered across
this field.  There are so many rodents in this field that sometime he just has
to jump down from a pipe & easily grab a meal.  He also perches in trees in the
immediate area.  I now consider this bird 'dependable.'
If you want to see this bird, I suggest parking on 14th St NW just East
of 5th Ave NE (Old Highway 8), there is room on the shoulder & his
favorite perches are visible from there.
Location:  New Brighton, Old Highway 8 Roughly from 694 to 14th St NW.

To get here: Easiest to Google Map:  154 14th Street NW New Brighton MN
Directions:  Highway 35W to Highway 96 - West on 96 to the T, left (South) at
the T, 14th Street is about 1/4 mile on the left.
