FYI: these might appeal to MN birders looking for a birding break: Bob
Russell, USFWS
Three Seasonal Field Assistants are needed to conduct surveys for
wetland-dependent birds in the Prairie Pothole Region of North and South Dakota
for 7 weeks from ca 11 April through 29 May (end date flexible for one
position). Surveys for waterbirds and associated habitat characteristics will
be conducted from a vehicle along road-based transects in an effort to look at
the potential effects of climate-change on birds that use the prairie potholes
during migration. After an initial training period, each assistant will conduct
surveys independently for the duration of the field season. Applicants should
have ability to work independently, experience surveying for and identifying
birds, good organizational and communication skills, lots of enthusiasm for
field work, and a valid driver’s license. Ideal candidates will have prior
experience surveying for waterfowl, shorebirds, and/or other wetland-dependent
bird species. Pay will average $14-17/hr, depending on experience. Housing (or
hotel) and vehicle will be provided. There is also the possibility to return
for fall migration surveys from the end of July into August, possibly September
(please note in cover letter if you are interested in this as well). To apply,
please send a cover letter, resume, and contact information for three
references to: Valerie Steen, U.S. Geological Survey, Fort Collins Science
Center, 2150 Centre Ave. Bldg C, Fort Collins, CO 80526-8118; vsteen AT
usgs.gov. Email is preferred.
