We saw the Rough-legged Hawk today sometime around 2:30pm from the service
road in front of the long building on 14th St. We had driven around the
area for 5-10 min, scanning all the trees. Then as we were driving down the
service road, it flew in from the west and landed in a tree to the south.
It was not on top of the tree nor out to the side on a branch, but from our
point of view it was against the trunk and inner branches. I mention this
because I don't think we would have picked it up if we hadn't seen it fly
in, so if you're looking for it, be patient, and wait for it to move. We
waited a little while, hoping it would start hunting, but it sat tight. As
we left to turn on Old Highway 8, we spotted a Bald Eagle in the far trees
to the west. No traffic, so we stopped to look at it - then a scan back to
the hawk showed it still perched in the tree. We returned a couple hours
later after completing errands, but it was gone. Thanks to Jason for
posting.
