While volunteering a 5th grade conservation field trip yesterday near Frazee in
Becker Co. 3 of 5 afternoon groups of approximately 20 students per group were
able to see a feeding and calling virginia rail from distances as close as 15
feet. They passed around two sets of binoculars and were all able to see it
naked aye and optically aided. A fourth group heard the bird calling. It was
awesome to see the kids so excited about something non-electronic! I tried to
impress upon them how special it was to see one that close. I even told them
all to go home and research the bird on Google. This morning one of my
co-workers told me that her son was in one of the groups and was all excited
about some bird in the water when he got home. Maybe that one rail planted a
seed or two. Very cool day. Bird was seen on private property.
