On Tuesday a.m. we birded the Sax-Zim Bog area of St. Louis County for
four hours. We came up with 23 species including these:
Evening Grosbeaks (15)- Blue Spruce Road feeders
Pine Grosbeaks (2)- Blue Spruce Road and Stone Lake Rd. feeders
Gray Jays (9)- Blue Spruce, Admiral, and Stone Lake Rd. feeders
Common Redpolls - feeders especially Blue Spruce Rd.
Sharp-tailed Grouse (9)- lek area sw of Arkola Rd. at Poplar Rd.
Red Crossbill (6)- Owl Rd. and Admiral Rd.
White-winged Crossbill (25+) Owl Rd., Admiral Rd. and CR 29 in
Meadowlands
Snow Bunting (2) Poplar Rd. just south of Arkola Rd.
     Rough-legged Hawks (10) ubiquitous
Pine Siskin (1) Stone Lake Rd. feeder
     Northern Shrike (6) throughout area
     Red-breasted Nuthatches - all feeders
Boreal Chickadee (1) Admiral Rd. feeder
We dished on the Owls, Goshawk, and Three-toed Woodpeckers (both
species). Another birder told us he saw a Black-backed Woodpecker along
Zulo Rd.(sp.?)westerly of Admiral Rd.
Enroute to the Cities, we stopped in Duluth and saw the Glaucous,
Iceland, and Thayer's Gulls at the compost site off 27th Avenue. Not
having a scope, we were unable to view the gulls out on the ice so did
not experience seeing the supposed Glaucous-winged Gull. It was great
to be in Minnesota. Thanks for having us.
