Busy Day at Pickerel Lake:
Much of the waterfowl is located at the far end of the lake from the parking
area, requiring some hiking or a scope for viewing. Ice coverage has gone from
approx 80% on Tues. to 40% today.
One item of interest- goose in an owl/eagle nest. Hopefully just checking out
the nest. Otherwise those gosling are in for a 20 ft. drop when they hatch.
American Crows-75 on the ice socializing.
Canada Geese-approx. 50.
Cackling Geese-6
Mallards-18
RWBB-13
Ring-necked Ducks-6
Coots-8
Gulls-15 (sleeping Herring or ring-billed I believe)
Bald Eagle-1
Common Merganser-6
Hooded Merganser-7
Wood Duck-5
Gadwall-2
Finch(sp.?)-4 house or purple, moving quickly in the tree-tops.
Sparrows (many flying between cattails and trees)-Song and possibly something
else. My sparrow ID skills are admittedly basic.
