Hi, The largest concentration of Red-headed Woodpeckers in the state are at Cedar Creek Bog in northern Anoka County. The count from December's Christmas Bird Count was 56 birds. They overwinter most years.
There are other Red-headed Woodpeckers in the metro area, but there are usually no more than a single isolated pair nesting. And, they would be scattered about the area outside the urban area. Directions to the Cedar Creek RHWO's: Head north on Hwy 65 to 237th Avenue (CR24) and turn right (east). When the road T's, turn right (south) on CR26. The road will turn to the east. Take the first left turn (Durant St) and look for the woodpeckers along the road. You can park at the end of the road in the parking lot and walk the public trails. There are lots of woodpeckers west of the parking lot. Nest trees should be marked with colored ribbons.
