I covered a bit less of an area at Rapids Lake MVNWR than I normally do, not
covering the immediate west shore of Rapids Lake and not going north of Carver
Rapids along the river. Select count-

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 2
Eastern Phoebe 2
Barn Swallow 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 5
Hermit Thrush 2
Yellow-rumped Warbler 18
Field Sparrow 5
Vesper Sparrow 1
Swamp Sparrow 2 migrants (not anywhere near water)
White-throated Sparrow 4
Harris's Sparrow 1 (not quite full breeding plumage)
White-crowned Sparrow 1
Dark-eyed Junco 3
Eastern Meadowlark 4

Rice Lake was active again today. The rain seemed to help as some previously
favorable distant areas for shorebirds now have deeper water. Besides
shorebirds there were Blue and Green-winged Teal, Mallard, Great Egret,
Bonaparte's and Ring-billed Gull, and Belted Kingfisher.
Of shorebirds only Dunlin totals are
an exact count. Totals of other birds are estimates of those identified
as birds rarely stayed still for long. Total shorebird count was 324
made when group stayed relatively still including distant birds.

Greater Yellowlegs 50
Lesser Yellowlegs 150
Pectoral Sandpiper 50
Dunlin 20 (some breeding plumage, some gaining breeding plumage)
