At 5:45 Saturday evening the first duck I looked at from the Prairie Island
spillway was a nice adult male Surf Scoter. The bird was diving, resting,
etc., by itself, though there were scattered flocks of Scaup, Bufflehead and
Ruddy Ducks around as well. The spillway is located just east of the entrance
to McNally Landing, along Prairie Island Road, roughly 2 miles NW of it's
intersection with Riverview Dr. in Winona.
GPS coordinates of Surf Scoter:
44.08629,-91.68039

Also perhaps of interest, the Cackling Goose that overwintered on West Lake
Winona is still there, usually loafing on the shore with a group of Canadas on
the north side of the lake.
