While working on the Breeding Bird Atlas in Norman county, I found Henslow's
sparrow in two locations in the past 9 days. I am posting directions to one
location because the birds are well out of expected range.
The bird at location one could not be refound on subsequent visits and it was
on private property, so I will only list the second location. The second
location (there may have actually been multiple birds here) was about 25 miles
from the first. Bird/s was heard on 6/20, heard and seen on 6/21, both times at
around 9:15 p.m. A short eared owl, family of magpies, upland sandpipers,
LeContes sparrow and prairie chickens were all seen in this general area.
Directions: GPS coordinates of the Henslow's sparrow are N 47 degrees 12.555,
W 096 degrees 21.491.
>From the town of Borup go 7 miles east on county hwy 39. Then go north two
>miles on 330th st. (county 28). This should put you at the intersection of
>330th st and 140th ave., and there should be a town hall at this intersection.
> The Dalby state wildlife management area is kitty corner from this town hall,
>but my map shows the Dalby area incorrectly, so yours may also. >From the
>intersection of the town hall, go east 3 tenths of a mile and listen for the
>bird on the north side of the road.
Alternate directions; go to Norman county and look for the large wetland....if
you find one, you are in the wrong county; refer to directions above...sorry,
it's late.
