Here is something you maybe didn't know about Forest Strnad....He "discovered" the Sax-Zim Bog as a unique birding area...by accident. Jan Green of Duluth relates the below story: This is another quick reply about some history of Sax-Zim. I think you can say it was discovered by Forest Strnad on July 26, 1963 when he found a family of Hawk Owls alony Co. Hwy 7 two miles south of Kelsey. This was written up in an extensive article for The Flicker: v.35, p. 129-134, 1963 (you can access this online on the MOU web site). At that time birders did not go up to the bog. The Avifaunal Club mostly went to Beltrami and Lake of the Woods Counties (Red Lake bog) for northern owls.
