We were at Louisville Swamp unit of the MN Valley NWR Saturday morning with a
group of 9 hardy souls willing to brave the heat. There are fewer birds
singing but did see/hear these:

Upland area:
Sparrows: field (many singing), song, chipping, clay-colored (1 singing)
Indigo buntings (still singing) - fairly numerous
Baltimore Oriole - saw one male, did not hear any singing
Bald Eagles - mature and juvenile
Red tailed hawk
Eastern wood peewee
Common yellowthroat (several singing), Redstart (a few)
Cedar waxwings & Goldfinch (many)
Did not notice any eastern bluebirds, brown thrashers or rosebreasted grosbeaks
(compared to last month when they were fairly numerous)

Lower area:
American Whilte Pelicans on the lake formed by Sand Creeks (~30)
There are some mudflats now down by the dike across Sand Creek. We could
clearly identify Killdeer. There were some other shorebirds but they were too
far away & too much heat shimmer, even with scopes.
Bluegrey gnatcatchers
Belted Kingfisher (1)
Great blue herons, but no Great Egrets visible.

Anne Hanley & George Skinner
