With the first Chimney Swift Count coming up this next weekend, Thursday through Monday, some of us are out scouting ahead for the species favored chimneys. While hoping to find the large communal night-roosts, it's just as important to identify the less populous breeding chimneys scattered throughout the neighborhoods. That means the more eyes on hand for the Count nights, the better. So far, drive-by scouting around Macalester-Groveland, Highland Park, Merriam Park, Midway, Summit-University, Selby-Dale, Xcel Center, Shepard Road, and W. 7th neighborhoods in St. Paul has revealed no huge communal roosts at the past sites. There have been numerous smaller flocks spotted foraging in all those areas, however, so THEY'RE OUT THERE! If anyone knows of a huge roost in those areas, please join the count, or at least let me know where to look. (Linda Whyte)
Volunteers throughout the state are once again needed to participate in Audubon Minnesota’s Annual Chimney Swift Sit for about an hour at dusk during July 20 – 23 and/or August 31 – September 3, counting swifts as they enter a nighttime roosting place. Volunteers can count on one night or on several nights during this designated period, and also at more than one location. Bring a kid or a friend or three and introduce someone new to the wonders of Chimney Swifts.….**** ** ** Please use this link to report your findings:**** https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?fromEmail=true&formkey=dDdoOTVENXFuNlVJVW5zc0g5Y01Ha2c6MA **** ** ** For more information about Audubon Minnesota’s Chimney Swift Conservation project and the Sit check out http://mn.audubon.org/chimney-swift-conservation-project**** ** ** If you cannot participate in the Sit but know places where Chimney Swifts might be roosting, please contact Ron Windingstad [email protected] . **** The information collected on this fourth annual event will be posted in early September on http://mn.audubon.org/**** ---- Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
