Sandhill crane count at Sherburne NWR this morning was 6755 birds - our highest count so far this year. High count in (warm) November last year was 7527. A single black-bellied plover was still on Stickney Pool mud flats, last leg of the Prairie's Edge Wildlife Drive on Thursday at noon. White-throated, Harris's and fox sparrows were still at the HQ feeders on Thursday afternoon, although numbers were way down. A northern shrike was in the feeder area then too. A beautifully colored rough-legged hawk was soaring over CR 70, NW corner of the refuge on Thursday late afternoon, and my first American Tree Sparrows of the year were in the same general area - a flock of 6 birds.
